PUNO - TITICACA

PUNO  
The city of Puno is located about 4000 meters above the sea, in the south of Peru, a golden land with natural pastures such as the Ichu. The main attraction of this region is the Titicaca Lake , the highest navigable lake in the world shared with Bolivia.

The Titicaca Lake is surrounded by a group of beautifull island full of color and life. In the Peruvian part of the lake we could visit Uros, Taquile, Amantani, Suasi, and much more.
   
PLACES TO SEE IN THE CITY  
Catedral: It was built in the XVII Century, This church is an example of the barroque style with andean elements which give to this monument a unique style.

Dreyer: Municipal Museum This museum has pieces of pottery, textiles, and pre- incas litic sculptures. It also has a numismatic collection and documents from the spanish foundation of the city.

Cerro Huajsapata: Huajsapata, which means “Witness of my love” is a natural viewpoint with a Panoramic view of the city and the Titicaca Lake. On the top is built the Manco Capac monument, it is said there are some caves that connect Puno with the Koricancha Temple of Cusco.
   
Parque Mirador Puma Uta:The park has a Puma stone monument– which simbolizes a protective guard of the Andes, built above a water fountain that simbolizes the Titicaca Lake.

Mirador Kuntur Wasi:Kuntur Wasi means "house of the condor" and offer an extraordinary view of the city and the Titicaca lake.

National Reserve of Titicaca  
This is a Natural Reserve that .protected an ecosystem since 1978 , with an area of 36.180.

The reserve is home of dozens of birds (over 60 species in total between resident and migratory birds), fishes (4 different families) and amphibians (18 native species). There are three islands in the lake, Huaca Huacani, Toranipata and Santa María.
   
TITICACA LAKE  
According to the andean mytology, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo the son and the daugther of the Sun, emerge from this lake and founded the Inca Empire.

Perú and Bolivia share the sovereignty of this lake, the highest of the World (3810 meters above the sea level) with an area of 8559 km2,, and a temperature between 9°C (48ºF) and 11°C (52ºF) between October and May, and -7°C (19ºF) and 10°C (14ºF). between June and September.
Lago Titicaca
 
The peruvian side of the Titicaca lake has different islands, among them Amantaní, Taquile, Soto, and Anapia (natural island) and the Island of the Uros (artificial island), each one with different attractions. La totora grows in the riverbank of the lake where different birds and fishes inhabit. Among them Carachis, ispis, bogas, umantos, suches (endangered species), pejerreyes and trouts. All of these native species with a high nutritive value.
   
The Island of the Uros, It’s located at the north side of Puno, and entirely made of "totora" (marsh reeds), as a consecuence one of the world's most unique tourist attractions. inhabited by two thousand Uros, who claim to be "kot-suña" (the people of the lake), and to have black blood, that cannot drown and never feel the cold. For this reason, -they claimed themself as the best fishermen.
Islas Flotantes
   
Amantani Island: Located at 3.817 meters above the sea level, with an extension of 9 km2. The muña, kantuta, salvia, tola and patamuña are the most famous native plants. Eight communities inhabit the island. The agriculute is the main economy activity being the potato, corn, oca, quinua, beans and peas the most produced. The textile and the stone cutting art .are the principals activity.

Among its main attractions are two natural viewpoints in the highest part, where the whole lake can be seen, as well as some prehispanic vestiges, ceremonial centres and a momies cemetery.
   
Taquile island: 35 kilometers to the east of Puno, with an area of six square kilometers, is the largest of the islands found in the lake and has an interesting variety of microclimates. The town of Taquile (3,950 m.a.sl.) has some Tiahuanaco and Inca ruins. Furthermore, the Inca moral principles Ama Sua (Do not steal), Ama Quella (Do not lie), and Ama Lulla (Do not be lazy) are still obey by the inhabitants. If one of the thousand plus inhabitants break these rules, the islands community authorities may even banish the lawbreaker as punishment.

WEATHER  
Puno is located on the riverbank of the Titicaca Lake with a dry cold weather. The rainy season starts in October and finish in April. The maximun temperature is 14°C (58ºF) and the minimum is 3°C (37ºF). Its geographical coordenates are: 15º 50'20" S, 70º 01' 43" O.
