Arequipa is located in the South-west of Peru at 2335m above the sea, in a fertile valley between the Atacama dessert and the Cordillera de los Andes mountains, in the shadow of three giant volcanoes. Chachani, at 6,075m is the highest, but it is the perfectly conical Misti that draws the attention. After the rainy season, when the snowline reaches several thousand meters below the summit, it is wonderful just to admire the mountain.
Although Arequipa is in the middle of a desert, agriculture and cattle farming are the main economical activity, being the textile industry the main activity.
Arequipa was also know as the “White City” for its numerous temples, and big houses built with ashlar (a volcanic rock). This gives the city a majestic appearance, especially on the sunset when the changing colours of the sky are reflected in the facades of the buildings. In 2000, the Arequipa Historic Center was declared by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage of the World.
Arequipa is a wonderfull city to stay a few days, exploring its beautifull center and relaxing in the many cafes and bars.
